Austria 4: World Wondering

Short film connoisseurs usually associate Austrian experimentalism with flickering images and noisy sound. A new generation of filmmakers around Anna Vasof, Michael Heindl, Total Refusal or Viktoria Schmid, however, cares little about these (outdated) conventions. Here, instead, genres and approaches are mixed at will, switching seemingly effortlessly from the performative to the humorous and from the political to the personal. The sound and the musical level always play an important role – be it as a rhythmic part of the performative act or as a touching link to the visual level. Sometimes we go headlong through the wall, but at other times we take it very gently, we are amazed by new perspectives, or we find ourselves holding our breath. Together we wonder about the world. ”Can we start glitching?”

HITTING MY HEAD ON THE WORLD

Time and again physical gestures play a crucial role when travelling, when our personal language is incapable of overcoming communication barriers and desires cannot be put into words. It is about reaching an understanding, how to identify with the world.

Austria 2019 / 13:00 / Director: Anna Vasof

HARD-HEADED HARMONY

Nine bronze statues in London of historic figures ranging from Marx to Chaplin are arranged on a single screen. The filmmaker climbs them all to create a synchronised tone with a hammer.

Austria 2019 / 1:30 / Director: Michael Heindl

HARDLY WORKING

Hardly Working sheds a limelight on the very characters that normally remain in the background of video games: NPCs. They are non-player characters that populate the digital world as extras to create the appearance of normality. A laundress, a stable boy, a street sweeper and a carpenter are observed with ethnographic precision. They are Sisyphus machines, whose labour routines, activity patterns as well as bugs and malfunctions paint a vivid analogy for work under capitalism.

NYC RGB

A view of New York that we have never seen before, made possible by historical colour film processes. The material, triple exposed with different colour filters, mixes colours, space, and time to a perception that is possible only in film.

Austria 2023 / 7:00 / Director: Viktoria Schmid

STAY A LITTLE LONGER

Striking images, always in motion and yet exuding calm. A captivating song meandering between despair and hope. A music video by filmmaker Lydia Nsiah and musician Mira Lu Kovacs.

Austria 2021 / 3:30 / Director: Lydia Nsiah

GAZE WITH ME

This project was realised through the collaboration with photographers found on Facebook who are looking for young girls they can shoot naked. The film observes a scene of powerplay in which the director and photographers are battling for control.

Austria 2019 / 7:00 / Director: Lena Kuzmich

KIESLER'S BODY

Frederick Kiesler’s Film Guild Cinema comes to life. The cinema screen becomes the viewer and ultimately a gateway for the muses of organic architecture. Crawling around, they explore the early work of their later companion and foretell the transformation in his architectural approach.

Austria 2023 / 4:00 / Director: Ganael Dumreicher

ISSUES WITH MY OTHER HALF

How many ways can the human body be divided into two parts?
