Austria 3: International Broadcast

Spiralling into TV broadcasts. Glitter and Doom, Stardom and Fabulousness. Old songs celebrating the romantic of the near and the exotic of the far, subverted by untamable forces of imagination and resistance. Best of ESC, all coming from a strange country surrounded by mountains and hills. A seemingly impossible chorus of solidary struggle and shared pleasures. A heart wrenching television programme assembling a canon of Austrian realities.

HAPPY DOOM

Happy Doom is an audiovisual poem, an ode to colour intoxication and vertigo. The screen is a vibrating membrane that simultaneously spits and swallows colours and noisy beats – a hypnotic deformed circumpolar psychedelic short trip.

BEAUTIFUL ALIEN GIRL

The video work The Beautiful Alien Girl reveals constant cliches through the footage by Gerhard Polt from the end of the 70s. In this video, the female figures are objectified and fulfil the white male fantasy. In doing so, this video satirises the reality and stereotypes in Europe and indicates that Gerhard Polt’s footage still has relevance today.

HYÄNE FISCHER – IM RAUSCH DER ZEIT

Nature mysticism meets iPhone, negligee meets Loden jacket. Hyäne Fischer sings, dances, and drinks with her girlfriends. A cottage in the mountains, the peak, a symbol of something outlasting all times; the fog, the materialisation of another world spirit. Kurdwin Ayub and Caroline Bobek take possession of the myths and dreams of patriarchy and reoccupy them — and in their pictures, no men are to be seen.

Austria 2018 / 4:00 / Director: Kurdwin Ayub

C-TV (IF I TELL YOU I LIKE YOU...)

The earth has been shaken, the television studio destroyed, C-TV goes on air: Hedi, the plush talk show host welcomes people with disabilities who offer insight into their daily lives and their artistic and political work.

Austria 2023 / 30:00 / Director: Eva Egermann, Cordula Thym

“... A SEEMINGLY IMPOSSIBLE DUET ...”

The solo Comeback draws upon a drag performance that Tubi Malcharzik put on in the gymnasium of their elementary school. In a game of holding on tight to memories and fictionalisation, a picture puzzle of queer childhood experiences comes into focus.

Austria 2020 / 9:00 / Director: Tubi Malcharzik
