Colectivo Los Ingrávidos

Since their inception in 2012, Mexican Colectivo Los Ingrávidos has produced an invigorating and forceful body of works, consisting of a plethora of digital pieces and a steadily expanding and variegated corpus of work shot on 16mm film. Formally inventive, politically acute and sonically rich, the films show kinships with the avantgarde milieux of the post-war era as well as the energies and formal investigations of 1960’s and 1970’s experimental film culture.

IMPRESSIONS FOR A LIGHT AND SOUND MACHINE

A woman raises her voice and gives a painful and endless speech that with time becomes even more overwhelming. Her words are heartbreaking and permanent impressions in the collective memory, stabbing an old Mexican film, a celluloid that tears apart until its disappearance.

COYOLXAUHQUI

Coyolxauhqui recasts the mythical dismemberment of the Aztec Moon goddess Coyolxauhqui by her brother Huitzilopochtli, the deity of war, the Sun and human sacrifice. The film is a poem of perception, one that unveils how contemporary Mexican femicide is linked to a patriarchal history with roots in deeper cultural constructs.

THE SUN QUARTET, PART 1: SUNSTONE

The Sun Quartet is a solar composition in four movements, a political composition in four natural elements, an audiovisual composition in four bodily mutations: a sun stone where youth blooms in protest, a river overflowing the streets, the burning plain rising in the city. And, finally, the clamor of the people that shook Mexico after the night of September 26, 2014. The disappearance of 43 students from Ayotzinapa opened a breach in the Mexican political body.

DRY BLOOD

Various historical moments of political activism in Mexico are superimposed and corroded on the emulsion of expired film. Footage from the International Women’s Day in 2017 is coupled with the recording of a powerful speech about the gruesome aftermath of the 2006 civil unrest in San Salvador Atenco.

DANZA SOLAR

The dance comes from the ancient archive found in Super8 while the solar part was filmed in 16mm, generating several layers of superimposition between the sun (suns), the dance and the plain, thus pointing to the evocation of a communal solar trance, both Andean as a Mesoamerican.Shamanic Materialism is a Mesoamerican spell unleashed.

TONALLI

Drawing on the ancient Nahuatl concept of the animating soul or life force, Tonalli engages the ritualistic powers of the cinema, summoning fire, flowers, and many moons into a frenetic and mesmerizing in-camera collage. Here, amid thickly swirling images and textured abstractions, the gods of creation and fertility manifest, dissolving into iridescent colors and dense, corporeal rhythms.
