Selected Works from School Friedl Kubelka

Analog Imagination 1

The School Friedl Kubelka for Independent Film is a unique place for people of different origins, social backgrounds and ages to meet and learn about the art form of analog film. For almost 20 years, the school has been promoting the artistic practice of filmmakers and offering exchange and dialogue with acclaimed film artists, thereby shaping an entire generation of analog filmmakers. Made and screened on Super 8, 16 mm and 35 mm film, these works show a cinema of deeply personal and formally independent expression.

The first program deals with the idea that throughout our lives we take on many roles and are in constant relationship with other people and our environment. We are someone’s child, parent, lover, ex-partner, or friend, and even when we choose to be alone, we interact with the world around us.

These programmes are the result of a collaboration between the European Short Film Network and the School Friedl Kubelka screened at all network festivals.

AT THE EDGE OF THE CURTAIN

A place essentially bound up with dismal memories and the smell of old leather and sweat becomes a stage for enraptured performances. The setting and habitat of At the Edge of the Curtain is a gymnasium. Its occupants: three women whose relationships and states of desire are as multiple and ambivalent as themselves are amorphous and fragmented. Subjectivities circulate, but their bodies persist in stasis.

YA NADIE CABE EN ESTE MUNDO, Y MENOS EL

”Nobody fits in this world anymore, least of all him” is the translated title of the film which refers to a quote from a child, playing in the streets of Mexico City in December 2022. It documents fragments of patterns and structures of the city. Through the use of single frame snapshots along with some longer glimpses, it leaps through time and space and manifests itself as a filmic diary of personal memories. Captured on Super8 film and edited in camera.
