Babylon’13 is an independent Ukrainian collective of filmmakers that was formed at the beginning of the Revolution of Dignity in 2013. For 13 years now, the team has been capturing the turning points of Ukraine’s modern history, documenting the course of the Russian-Ukrainian war, and exposing the crimes of the Russian Federation to the world. Over this time, they have released more than 500 short documentaries and 12 feature films.

Babylon’13 presents an anthology of six short documentary films that capture the uncensored experience of living through an ongoing war. Diverse directorial perspectives come together to form a mosaic of honest personal stories about joy, anxiety, loss, and achievement. These are six films about people who continue to live, defend their values, and fight for their right to be free. The anthology includes not only films created directly by Babylon’13, but also those produced in cooperation with or through the technical support of the collective.

SKATEBOARDING ON THE FRONT LINE

In the city of Kharkiv, which is shelled every day and is constantly under threat, it is impossible to forget about the war. But thanks to their love of skateboarding, the film’s heroes become simply teenagers for a while and ride carefree through the city streets, despite the threat of missile strikes. FOG IN POKROVSK, DRONES ARE NOT FLYING (ALMOST)

When the military began to use FPV drones, evacuations of residents from frontline settlements became much more dangerous. Volunteers use detectors that warn them when danger is approaching. But this does not always help, since drones operate on different frequencies. Fog, gusty wind, snow and rain are the best friends of volunteer evacuators: drones do not fly in bad weather.

SECOND WIND

Mykyta Hirnia, is a clarinetist from Chernihiv. Before the war, he taught conducting at the local music school and played in several music collectives. But the war changed his daily life dramatically. When the Russian full-scale invasion began, his students were scattered around the world as they fled the war, and his music collectives fell apart. To avoid being idle and to be useful to society in this difficult time, Mykyta became a volunteer. Now he brings basic necessities on his bike to those who need them, under shelling and fire. What helps him keep his mind balanced is his old hobby: the traditional Chinese tea ceremony.
