Dance not Dance Rewind

There are dance films and then there are dance films that are not really dance films. Dance not dance films where dance is the main thrust or an exquisite spice. Films where choreography and bodily movement illustrate something that cannot – or isn’t allowed to – be expressed in other ways. It’s dance as an opportunity and as an obstacle. The films in these two programmes depict their realities and histories with intense personality and political activism. Most of all, they are powerful and by turns fast-paced and intimate audiovisual journeys with dance as vehicle for potential freedom.

Dance Not Dance Rewind looks back at some of the best dance not dance films from the last few years. They are films with a rebellious nature, bending genre norms and other rules along the way.
