Uppsala International Film Residency

Nicolas Gebbe

Screened:
FRI 23/10, 21:00 SLOTTS

With sharp wit and a keen eye for current social criticism, Nicolas Gebbe and his films explore how new technologies interact with advertising and social media to distort reality and shape desires, fantasies and memories. Inspired by architecture and everyday spaces, his works are often based on existing spaces that surround us and our habitual movements within them in relation to the digital reality. Realms that withdraw themselves from our attention are made visible. Intermediate dimensions are exposed, viewing habits questioned. In confrontation with the digital chaos, one is challenged to reflect on one’s own reality.

Nicolas Gebbe is a filmmaker, 3D artist and sound designer born in 1986 in London, currently working in Frankfurt am Main in Germany. He focuses on experimental 3D animation and hybrid film formats. His films have been screened at festivals like Locarno Film Festival, TIFF, Ann Arbor Film Festival and Kurzfilmtage Winterthur.

Nicolas Gebbe will be present at the screening to talk about his work.

In 2021 Region Uppsala, in collaboration with Uppsala Short Film Festival, launched the Uppsala International Film Residency. This residency programme enables a professional filmmaker working in Europe to reside in the county of Uppsala for a four week period. The aim of the residency is to offer the filmmaker time for the creative development of an ongoing project as well as teaching opportunities and exchanges with regional filmmakers and students.

Gebbe-Urban Dreamscape

URBAN DREAMSCAPE

Walking through a city, one is often not aware of one’s surroundings. The images seen mix with thoughts, occasionally blur, are sketchy. Only certain parts of the path are perceived and when you look back, these snapshots form a collage of some sort. With the technique of photogrammetry Urban Dreamscape captures and stages these parts in a way that empathises with this phenomenon.

Join an eerie trip into the luxurious world of unfulfilled dreams, nostalgia, and desire and catch a unique glimpse through the polished facades of the reality-distorting imagery of social media.

LOCKDOWN DREAMSCAPE

When you spend a lot of time at home in isolation, the walls begin to move. The sense of time fades, the days pass quietly, everything seems to repeat itself endlessly. Spaces, conversations, visual impressions and sounds merge and make everything seem like a long dream.

THE SUNSET SPECIAL 2

This exclusive luxury cruise presents itself as the perfect holiday and a family utopia. However, all artificial facades of this attractive consumer product dissolve as a psychedelic dream world unfolds, illusions break and the crude reality beyond superficial comfort is unveiled.

Gebbe-Display Nature

DISPLAY NATURE

Blending CGI collages, photogrammetry, and real footage, Display Nature explores how urban and digital spaces mirror our idea of nature and ourselves. The result is a reflection on perception, absurdities of commodification, and disconnection within artificial modern life. “Shape nature, to shape yourself.”
