Imagine Sápmi - Sámi queer moving images

Screened:
SAT 24/10, 17:00 SLOTTS

Imagine Sápmi is a living, ongoing archive within SAQMI – The Swedish Archive for Queer Moving Images which collects, preserves, shows, and imagines what Sámi queerness can look and feel like in moving images. This collection aims to make Sámi queer culture, struggles, and lives visible across time, enable screenings and contexts where they can be seen and discussed, inspire and create new possibilities and encounters. Imagine Sápmi is a part of the screening project Queer Moving History which has curated public film programmes for various contexts since 2020, bringing together contemporary and older films.

“The purpose of Queer Moving History is in part to lift up stories with a queer look back into history, while also making local queers, contemporary stories, and perspectives more visible and allowing these stories – historical and contemporary – to meet a new audience. Working with an intersectional perspective, the project wishes to make visible norms, artistic perspectives on social issues (and vice versa), and the importance of recording history in today’s struggles for human rights.”

Curator: Anna Linder

QUEERING SAPMI

QUEERING SÁPMI

The film Queering Sápmi is a result of the project with the same title that was performed between 2011 and 2015, with the aim of highlighting queer Sámi stories that in different ways portray the human as belonging to more than one category. With beautiful pictures and stories from queer Sámi, the film creates a portrait of Sápmi that challenges sexuality and gender rules.

SÁPMI PRIDE, GIRONIS

What would be another meeting for those involved in the Queering Sápmi project instead became the world’s first Sami pride festival, Sápmi Pride. In mid-October 2014, queer Sami gathered in Kiruna for seminars and workshops. The first Sami pride parade attracted around 300 people. Filmed for the Sami channel Márkomáilbmi.
