Animals Are Better Than People

Screened:
MON 19/10, 21:00 FYRIS
SAT 24/10, 19:00 FYRIS

Much more than just cute cat videos and dog clips, these are this year´s sweetest, though-provoking and touching films about our favourite pets. The best cat and dog films of the year make up a treasure trove of love letters to the animals we share a home with and hold as tender captives. They are warm and respectful explorations into these profound and elusive relationships and what they do to us. Sure, they’re awfully cute but first and foremost they are six intimate and sensitive portraits of our best friends, the pets.

Curator: Christoffer Ode

Henry is a girl who likes to sleep

HENRY IS A GIRL WHO LIKES TO SLEEP

In a small interior space where bodies constantly yearn for sleep, the filmmaker seeks in her beloved Henry something soft and tender to inhabit, a little fur to retreat into. Between bedsheets and freckles, a love declaration emerges, a fragile collage tracing a pathway between intimacy, vulnerability, and warmth. An ode to our captive pets, and to the intimate worlds where we learn to live and to rest.

TUNTEMATON KOIRANI (UNKNOWN DOG OF MINE)

The lives of dogs and humans are forever entangled. This film inspects the agency of dogs in a world dictated by humans and the possibility of companionship that transcends different species. These dogs aren’t interested in film, but what are they interested in?

Animals-Yuko 2

YUKO

A cat’s world collapses. Three days to go. For Yuko, life is a rhythm: sleeping, watching, wandering the courtyard. The same quiet rituals, day after day. Yet Yuko looks distant, as if he were somewhere else. At night, his dreams carry him to endless green lawns, somewhere beyond the door, somewhere unreachable. Then, one day, he is suddenly taken to another house. Everything he knows disappears.

BEI KUN ZHU DE GOU (A TRAPPED DOG)

The compulsory study night at the high school is disrupted by a sudden blackout. Ke Ke slips off campus with a mysterious dog, drifting through streets and fields until the boundary between human and animal begins to dissolve; and he starts to lose himself, slowly consumed by instinct.

A MAN WITH 19 CATS

A MAN WITH 19 CATS

Under the warm sunlight of Silicon Valley, California, there stood a house covered in lush greenery, where a software engineer from Taiwan had made his home. This short documentary observes his daily life, his moods, and his nineteen very special friends: the feral cats who visit him every day. Together, they weave a life that is simple, peaceful, yet uniquely extraordinary.

I DON'T SPEAK DOG (BUT I'LL TRY)

A filmmaker unpacks her evolving relationship with her adolescent German Shepherd, confronting the painful question of why, despite the fact that she raised him, he seems to love her partner more. Blending documentary footage with personal narration, this tender story of unrequited love unfolds into an intimate inquiry into the complexities of caregiving and cross-species bonds.
