Nataliya Ilchuk - International Film Residency

Nataliya Ilchuk is a Ukrainian filmmaker and artist born in Lviv in 1985. She studied at film schools in Kyiv and Warsaw before graduating from Le Fresnoy – Studio National des Arts Contemporains in France in 2020. Since 2022, she is PhD candidate at CY Cergy Paris Université and ENSAPC. She works with private archives, exploring the impact of modern technology and political ideology on constructing human relationships and art processes. In her research she is also exploring the constraints of an artist’s liberty while attempting to establish the link between authenticity in cinema and different forms of external and internal pressure, notably those of censorship and self-censorship. These concepts are also present in her eloquent and thoughtful films. Her sensitively laconic, acutely perceived and concise films depict the economic social reality of a country going through the war on an intimately personal and political level.

Natalya Ilchuk will be present at the screening to talk about her work.

In 2021 Region Uppsala, in collaboration with Uppsala Short Film Festival, launched the Uppsala International Film Residency. This residency programme enables a professional filmmaker working in Europe to reside in the county of Uppsala for a four week period. The aim of the residency is to offer the filmmaker time for the creative development of an ongoing project as well as teaching opportunities and exchanges with regional filmmakers and students.

MATERNITY

Maternité is a film about the fatigue of a mother of two small kids. The act of self-sacrifice for the sake of a child that absorbs all the time and leaves no space either for consumption, nor for satisfactions or vanity, becomes a chance for a devoted woman in a condition of the physical and emotional exhaustion to reach the transcendental state close to spiritual ecstasy.

SENSITIVE MATERIAL

The film’s starting point is a collection of randomly shot moments of happiness and an accidentally captured audio recording. In a painful conversation, fifty-year-old Lilia speaks of her mental trauma as a result of her parents’ constant disputes during her childhood, while her mother justifies the lack of love by the strict frames of a totalitarian society.

THE SEVENTH SHIFT

‘The Seventh Shift’ is a portrait of a solitary woman who works four jobs in a nearly abandoned Ukrainian town. She manages to maintain her integrity by avoiding the paradigms imposed by the social conditions of existence, focusing instead on the world beyond material dimension with its many limitations.
