Science New Wave: Mathematics

Welcome into the world of mathematics. In eight short films, numbers turn into poetry, patterns transform into insights, and infinity and higher dimensions awaken wonder at the unimaginable. We move from the beauty and mysteries of nature and the universe to the intuitive images that take shape in the mathematician’s inner world. Along the way, we encounter mathematics as a human story – shaped by emotions, creativity, and its role in culture and society. Researchers from Uppsala University will be present to offer perspectives onthe films, answer questions, and share mathematics’ significance for science, society, and our lives as human beings. Whatever your previous knowledge or experience of the subject, we hope to offer new insights, inspiration, and thoughts to carry with you.

This programme is presented in collaboration with Uppsala University.

MATTER PATTERNS

Many people believe that mathematics and science somehow detract from the beauty of nature. We respectfully disagree – for science has shown that nature is mathematics and mathematics nature.

LOGICALLY POLICED

Nature, Galileo once said, is a book written in the language of mathematics. 400 years later mathematics has become an essential tool for driving human progress and innovation. This film brings together an unexpected group of science communicators – from a stand-up comedian to a professional juggler – alongside university professors, to reflect on our relationship with mathematics. Together they explore why we often resist numbers, yet cannot live without them.

chasing the worlds (1)

CHASING THE WORLD’S LARGEST NUMBER: COMBINATIONS

A personal, poetic and philosophic math road trip through California, guiding the viewer through the mental journey it is to grasp truly large numbers, via the universe, human cells, travel planning and paradoxes of the infinite. Combinations is the third chapter of the film, screened in its entirety in the programme Science New Wave: Wonder Beyond Facts.

spinning top

SHORT TRIPS IN THE LAND OF MATH – KOVALEVSKAIA'S SPINNING TOP OR THE BEST WAY TO SPIN

How do you model the movement of a potato in space? Many mathematicians have struggled with this question. At the end of the 19th century, mathematician Sofia Kovalevskaya finally obtained an important result for determining the motion of a solid around a fixed point, thanks to a very special spinning top.

MATHEMATICAL LABYRINTHS WORKSHOP, HORNBY ISLAND

This film is about year 1 of a 5 year project on restorying math with a whole intergenerational community, through the arts. Through shared explorations of intriguing mathematical patterning, we hope that people will start to have better stories and friendlier relationships with math.
