Lithuania: Bodily Functions

Diverse in genre – from animation and video art to fiction – this program presents a variety of approaches to exploring the complexities of the human body and its functions. It delves into natural processes that we all experience but often struggle to accept and examines efforts to reprogram behaviours in pursuit of a more ideal self. Through a range of artistic expressions, the program invites viewers to engage with the nuances of bodily experiences, from the everyday and deeply personal to the relational aspects that involve others and challenge societal norms. It encourages reflection on our ongoing quest for self-improvement and understanding.

HELPLESS CURE

“Helpless Cure” is a video work that develops parallels between the legitimisation of healthcare systems and of creative work, as well as between future and memories, self-care and the search for meaning. In the fictional world of the film, the boundaries between conventional and alternative medical practices blur as eternally youthful characters face the search for the self. Their departure points encompass the sincere, straightforward aspects of life, fluctuating between naivety and relative universality.

THE JUGGLER

We live in the same house, but in different apartments, jobs, situations, beliefs, visions. Each in our own compartment, we fool ourselves that the world is one and that it exists. Sometimes it seems that an incomprehensible thread becomes visible and I am on the verge of understanding. This film is about the other side of life – the scary, unknown side we never fully grasp, but we know is there, somewhere near, so close.

IEVA

Inside a lab, a robot is created. Like a newborn, it analyses its surroundings with the primitive senses and limited knowledge it has. While exploring such fundamental concepts as distance, weight, light and size, the robot tries to perform basic physical tasks that would resemble natural human motion. It fails miserably but still keeps trying. Man tries to recreate himself according to how he sees himself, but such a crooked reflection sinks into the valley of discomfort.
