Sámi Shorts

Sámi cinema is thriving like never before. What once focused mainly on short films has blossomed into a bold era of feature films and television productions, often created through international co-productions. Each January, Skábmagovat – Indigenous Peoples’ Film Festival invites audiences to discover the richness of Sámi and other Indigenous storytelling on screen. At the heart of the festival is the iconic Snow Theatre – a cinema built entirely of snow, where films are screened beneath the northern sky and sparkling stars. The Sámi Shorts programme highlights powerful contemporary voices exploring time, nature, land, climate change, and the legacies of colonisation. Together, they invite audiences to experience the world through another cultural lens and to reflect on how technological change continues to shape our lives.

THE OTHER SONG

The director finds recordings of his great-grandfather singing in Sámi, a language he cannot understand. The repercussions of the state-organised assimilation of the indigenous Sámi in Norway have taken many shapes – among them generational silence. In conversation with his grandmother, he tries to explore this lost heritage, a search facing the complexities of self-identification and effects of identity politics.

Their luggage is full of legacy from the world that is ending, and they will find the path to a portal when the first snow of the winter falls. The wind blows and leads the voyagers to a utopia, challenging them with the questions of being.
