EARTH SCIENCE NEW WAVE: PERSPECTIVES

Screened:
WED 21/10, 17:00 SLOTTS

Welcome to the fascinating world of Earth science. What is Earth science, really? It is the story of our living and dynamic planet. In four short films, we explore the hidden forces and grand patterns of our planet, from the shimmering world of minerals and the geometry of crystals to how nature’s shapes emerge and how our climate changes. Regardless of your prior knowledge, we hope to spark your wonder and offer brand new insights into the planet we inhabit. Researchers from the Department of Earth Sciences at Uppsala University will be present to offer perspectives and answer your questions along the way.

This programme is presented in collaboration with Uppsala University and Labocine.

Curators: Malin Eivergård, Marek Skupinski, Sebastian Willman

A MINERAL ODYSSEY

A MINERAL ODYSSEY

Minerals are far older than our most ancient civilisations and their contribution to industrial and technological revolutions have been immeasurable. This is a poetic and scientific odyssey through the mineral world from Tutankhamun’s iron dagger to the coltan in our smartphones.

France 2024 / 24:34 / Director: Théo Jollet, Martin Maire, Thomas Trichet

WHERE SHAPES COMES FROM

Where Shapes Comes From is a moving image work which considers how science translates nature, on an atomic scale. Filmed at the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History, a scientist goes about his daily work in mineral preparatory labs, cutting up large meteorites. A mineralogist describes the coming together of atoms to form matter.

United Kingdom, United States 2017 / 10:30 / Director: semiconductor

LATTICE

Iridescent waves, geometrical gardens, and spiralling sand dunes are found in the landscapes of a crystal’s microscopic structure. This film was made possible at the RISD Nature Lab.

SHE CHANGES CLIMATE

There can be no climate justice without gender justice. This short documentary gives voice to women leaders who are left out of global climate negotiations and explores the actions needed to create a better future for all.
