Lin Htet Aung: Filmmaker in Focus

Lin Htet Aung is a self-taught filmmaker, born in Myanmar in 1998, who in his early days wrote avantgarde poems and published underground poetry books. Growing up under military dictatorship, his art and films investigate regime propaganda and criticism from a deeply personal point of view, with highly inventive use of symbolism and abstraction. The films are quietly absurd, playful and unsettling in their discussion of his experiences growing up under oppression, offering wildly diverse visual approaches and storytelling in ways that are impressively accomplished and genuinely fresh.

His award-winning short films have been screened at International Film Festival Rotterdam, Internationale Kurzfilmtage Oberhausen, among others. Lin Htet Aung is a graduate of the Locarno Filmmakers Academy and an alumnus of Berlinale Talents.

Lin Htet Aung will be present at the screening to talk about his work.

ONCE UPON A TIME THERE WAS A MOM

On the day after a mother’s death, the father transforms back into his teenager-self, becoming the same age as his son. The film depicts the dysfunctional story metaphorically representing the insightful history of Burma by juxtaposing it with the Vessantara Jātaka tale (which is the famous tale about the final human past life of Buddha).

A METAMORPHOSIS

In the houses, after parting, Mothers were made up of tears. Sons were transformed into empty glass cups, and the lullabies became a curse. The film examines the suffering and resilience of the Burmese people by using the distinct political elements that have floated for several years on the ocean of political opera under repetitive military dictatorships in Myanmar.
