Dance not Dance Forward

There are dance films and then there are dance films that are not really dance films. Dance not dance films where dance is the main thrust or an exquisite spice. Films where choreography and bodily movement illustrate something that cannot – or isn’t allowed to – be expressed in other ways. It’s dance as an opportunity and as an obstacle. The films in these two programmes depict their realities and histories with intense personality and political activism. Most of all, they are powerful and by turns fast-paced and intimate audiovisual journeys with dance as vehicle for potential freedom.

Dance Not Dance Forward looks closer at dance as a means of expression in the most recent films, emphasising external manifestations of inner journeys and awakenings, both personal and political.

DUTY FREE

Is unconditional love an escapist dream? In a snowy no man’s land lies a floating bordershop-container with chains attached to a ferry terminal. Here Kaisa and her employees fill the shelves every day with their travelling customers’ dreams of escapism: alcohol, cigarettes and candies. Life in the bordershop is full of peace and harmony for the employees, except for the constant noise and vibrations from the construction site next door where a tunnel is being built. A near future without border crossings and border shopping, a future Kaisa doesn’t want to think about. When day shifts to night, the container once again turns into their personal paradise, where love comes as any other duty-free good.

I WAN'NA BE LIKE YOU

In this film Margit Lukács and Persijn Broersen delve into how wilderness, once seized, was recreated in Europe’s key botanical gardens. Through photogrammetry, 3D modeling, and motion capture, these gardens are transformed into a virtual jungle. The viewer is drawn into a decayed glasshouse by a ghostly, hybrid avatar, blending human and animal forms. This figure dances in a choreography by Andreas Hannes to a reinterpreted version of Disney’s The Jungle Book song, paying homage to the New Orleans Jazz tradition as arranged by David Lukács. As the music fades, Jamal Bijnoe and Orlando Ceder and their vocal group Black Harmony present their polyphonic chant “Na Mi” (Sranang for “I Am”), a proud reinterpretation of the melody that celebrates their community’s history in the diaspora. Through this process of deconstruction and reconstruction, the film envisions the novel, the film, the iconic song, and their enduring legacies.
