GYLFAGINNING-THE DELUDING OF KING GYLFI

King Gylfi’s deluding is the first chapter of The Prose Edda, one of the first Icelandic texts and probably the most exhaustive medieval source of our knowledge of Norse legends. The Gods tell the story of the creation myth while they perpetually trick the king with a cunning set of visual illusions. Lara is ten years old, this is her first reading of the Edda. She discovers the Norse universe at the same time as the camera discovers Iceland today.

WHAT TIME IS MADE OF?

What if you found a message in a bottle in the form of a sealed film can, which your younger self had sent 30 years ago? After processing this 16mm reel, swept ashore on the beaches of France, I discovered that the sea had left its mark and the film bears the memory of all the things it witnessed in its journey to land. However, these images proved to be my own childhood memories.

SILENCE OF THE SIRENS

Inspired by Kafka’s short text “The Silence of the Sirens”, which reinterprets Homer’s deadly songstresses as silent apparitions, the film focuses on a fictionalized portrait of Céline, an actress from Martinique. Living in Paris and struggling to find her place in the world, she goes on a quest of identity back to her roots. Highlighting the idea of cultural memory, Silence of the Sirens questions the commodification of images and the void they generate in the absence of a governing structure.

VOLCANO: WHAT DOES A LAKE DREAM?

Volcanos erupt from the depths of the boiling earth to the surface of the celluloid film, to create a new abstract cinematographic language. In her new film, Diana Vidrascu carries out an impressive aesthetic and photographic research while mixing mythological and scientific narratives and performing an extraordinary soundwork. Lulled by the stories told by the protagonists, we are caught up in these images of nature that transform into a disturbing but exciting, unreal and uncontrollable world.
